Giving cruise fans a live on-board view, even when they’ve got their feet on terra firma, Royal Caribbean have launched a new streaming service through a brand new app, Periscope. The app films footage through a smartphone or tablet camera and then broadcasts it around the world for people to view on their own devices.
Royal Caribbean are using the app as part of their COME SEEK LIVE campaign, in which they will beam footage from the Anthem of the Seas around the world and on massive billboards in New York City.
A Royal Caribbean statement read: “It will allow followers from around the world the opportunity to experience the adventures of influential seekers via live-streaming of 13 live broadcasts from five islands over seven days, beginning today. Streaming events will begin at the Las Playas natural water slide in Puerto Rico and adventure-hop from playing with green monkeys at the Wildlife Reserve in Barbados to riding ATVs in St. Maarten or enjoying a post-expedition refreshment made by a robot at Anthem’s Bionic Bar.”
Periscope followers will be able to direct the adventurers next steps with the unfolding story showing followers what they could be doing right at that moment on board a Royal Caribbean adventure.
Jim Berra, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Royal Caribbean International, continued: “COME SEEK LIVE is an exciting way for Royal Caribbean to challenge the misperceptions travellers have about the cruise industry. We are continually evolving the experience across our fleet, designing adventures that inspire and excite our travellers.
“It is natural that we would bring this innovation to the transformation of our marketing as well, especially as we recognize that millennials require us to communicate with them using new channels.”
Royal Caribbean are not the first cruise line to use Periscope in their marketing endeavours, with Norwegian Cruise Line also utilising technology. NCL used the app to film and live stream the official launch and christening of their brand new ship, Norwegian Escape.
